Speaking the Local Language

WHILE STATIONED at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, I learned the language and used it often in talking with Turkish civilians, many of whom worked on the base. After returning to the United States, I was with a friend in Miami on board a bus that was about to leave its stop. As the doors closed, I noticed an older woman running frantically to reach the bus. I jumped up and yelled to the driver to wait. But he merely turned to look at me, as did all the other passengers, and drove off. Astonished at this lack of consideration, I turned to my friend, who explained that the driver probably did not understand Turkish.
