The Pentagon's Southern Command in Miami says the U.S. military has delivered more than 300,000 pounds of relief to Hurricane Felix ravaged sections of Nicaragua in less than two weeks.
A U.S. military team based at the Soto Cano Air Basein Honduras coordinated the operation -- ferrying supplies both donated by relief groups as well as the governments of Venezuela, Nicaragua, El Salvador and the United States.
Supplies have included food, water, plastic sheeting and blankets.
The humanitarian relief effort began on Sept. 5, a day after the Category 5 hurricane slammed into Central America in a region historically known as the Mosquito Coast -- leaving dozens dead and more wounded in its wake.
Operations are now based in Managua and focused on moving supplies by Black Hawk helicopters to Puerto Cabezas and outlying areas in northeastern Nicaragua.
Earlier some U.S. Navy ships also provided some assistance from the sea.
Now, a Marine Corps cargo plane has been added to the effort, to provide fuel to the front lines of the relief work. In addition, Southcom said, the Marine plane brought six pallets of beds, a gift of El Salvador, to Puerto Cabezas on Sunday.
