A 20-year-old Bronx soldier admitted yesterday that he had paid a man $500 to shoot him in the knee so that he could avoid returning to the Iraq war.
The man, Jonathan Aponte, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of falsely reporting an incident and will be sentenced to one year in jail, the Bronx district attorney’s office said.
Mr. Aponte, a supply clerk on leave from the Iraq war, was shot in the knee in the Bronx on July 9. He told the police he had been shot during a robbery.
Prosecutors said the man charged with shooting Mr. Aponte, Felix Padilla, 24, had been recruited for the crime by Mr. Aponte’s wife at the time, Alexandra Gonzalez, 23.
Prosecutors said the couple had agreed to pay Mr. Aponte $500.
Mr. Padilla is facing charges of conspiracy, assault and illegal gun possession. Ms. Gonzalez is charged with assault and falsely reporting an incident, the prosecutor’s office said.
