Not sure why it is surprising, against lightly armed opposition they would be as efficient as ever.

While I think given the low sophistication of the enemy they face the French fort makes sense, what I don't get is the ditch around the outside as in my opinion it would do nothing other than provide an attacker with a covered position.

Military usually wants to do new things, not bring back the old.

In Vietnam War they decided a triangle was, hmmm, most efficient of manning or just best defence??

Same principle just less sides, against lightly armed insurgencies I imagine it is an effective form of protection.
