While I think given the low sophistication of the enemy they face the French fort makes sense, what I don't get is the ditch around the outside as in my opinion it would do nothing other than provide an attacker with a covered position.

What is a star if not two triangles.
Same principle just less sides, against lightly armed insurgencies I imagine it is an effective form of protection.
