BAGHDAD, Dec 12 (AFP) - Seven people were killed and more than 30 wounded in
attacks in Baghdad on Monday, including a blast near a hospital where
special voting was taking place for Iraq's general election, a security
source said.

Three police officers and a woman bystander were killed in a clash between
Iraqi security forces and gunmen in the Ghazaliyah district of western
Baghdad, said the source.

Another eight police officers were wounded in the firefight, but it was
unclear whether any of the gunmen, who opened fire on police at an
intersection, were killed or wounded.

In eastern Baghdad, two civilians were killed in an explosion near the Kindi
hospital. Nine other civilians and five police officers were wounded in the
same blast.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear, but early indications
pointed to a car bomb or homemade bomb lodged near a vehicle.

In a separate attack in western Baghdad, a police officer was killed and
seven others wounded when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle.

Three civilians also sustained injuries when a car bomb exploded alongside a
police checkpoint in the Nahrawan area of southeastern Baghdad.

In the southern neighborhood of Dura, the bodies of four men were discovered
with gunshot wounds, the security source said.

Hospital patients, detainees and Iraqi security forces voted Monday in a
special ballot, three days ahead of Iraq's landmark general election to
elect a 275-member parliament that is to steer the country through the next
four years.
