WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates called for the resignation of Gen. David McKiernan as the leader of international forces in Afghanistan on Monday....
McKiernan led the way in calling for an increased troop strength in Afghanistan as U.S. President Barack Obama pushed a dual strategy that calls for non-military strategy to combat the growing regional insurgency.******Can any of you folks shed any light on this move? Is McKiernan inept? A poor commander? Merely a political casualty? Curious move. I wonder whether he pressed his disagreement with Osama bin Urkel....and I'll bet Petraeus was none too happy with this move.

Could very well be more about Gates wanting to promote someone who has supported his views in the direction he wants the Armed Forces to go. Gates has been at odds with the Pentagon about the US forces being prepared for conventional actions or more responsive to smaller conflicts. Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal could be one of Gates' supporters.

President Obama has already agreed to increase troop strength in Afghanistan in line with what Gen. David McKiernan had requested.

This could just be more of a "change of Command" than any knock on Gen. David McKiernan.
