Michael Schumacher held the edge over world championship rival Fernando Alonso in final practice for the Turkish Grand Prix today.

Ferrari ace Schumacher has trimmed Alonso’s championship lead to just 10 points over the last four races and he signalled his intent to continue that trend in Istanbul.

The seven-times world champion clocked a best lap of one minute 27.203 seconds to beat Renault rival Alonso, in second place, by a massive 0.721secs.

Giancarlo Fisichella was close behind team-mate Alonso in third while Robert Kubica built on his impressive grand prix debut in fourth.

The BMW-Sauber driver was disqualified from a fine seventh in Hungary and showed he is capable of fighting with the front-runners again today.

He outshone team-mate Nick Heidfeld, in fifth, while Hungary winner Jenson Button continued his strong form in Turkey.

The Honda driver shone in Istanbul last year and followed up two top-three spots yesterday by taking sixth in today’s final practice.

Felipe Massa was down in seventh for Ferrari while Button’s team-mate Rubens Barrichello took eighth.

Kimi Raikkonen promised he had more speed than his lacklustre showing yesterday afternoon but struggled to hook up a lap to justify that boast. Last year’s winner was ninth for McLaren.

Scotsman David Coulthard improved slightly today to net 16th but he was comfortably beaten by 10th-placed Red Bull team-mate Christian Klien, who spun midway through the session.
