Much of the technology and firepower of the U.S. Air Force will be on display on the ground and in the air at the annual Scott Air Force Base Air Show Saturday and Sunday.
This year’s free show at the base near Belleville, called Airpower Over the Midwest, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Opening ceremonies will feature paratroopers jumping from planes at 11 a.m. each day.
The show annually attracts thousands of people to view displays of military aircraft and to see some of the Air Force’s most impressive planes flying over the base.
Featured performers this year include the Air Force Thunderbirds, the U.S. Special Operations Command parachute team and F/A-18 Tac Demo and F-15 demo flights.
Visitors to the show may buy food and drinks and stop by other vendors’ booths at the air base.
The Air Force Thunderbirds are scheduled to fly at 2 p.m. each day. Beyond that, a schedule of when each aircraft will fly is unavailable. Base officials explained that even during shows, aircraft sometimes must delay flights because of maintenance issues, crew availability and weather conditions.
Parking at the air show is free. But construction projects have limited the parking spaces on base. Parking for the disabled does remain available on base.
Parking also will be available at nearby Mid America Airport. A free shuttle service will take passengers to and from Mid America Airport to Scott. Base officials recommend carpooling and the use of MetroLink and Metro bus service. Regular public transportation fees apply.
Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and to bring lawn chairs, ear plugs, sunscreen, cameras, diaper bags for babies and water bottles. Smoking is not permitted on the flightline where aircraft will be displayed.
Scott Air Force Base is one of the oldest continuous service Air Force installations in the nation. The base and its 375th Airlift Wing now host three Air Force headquarters operations: United States Transportation Command, Military Surface Deployment & Distribution Command and Air Mobility Command.
