BAGHDAD - Ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and six co-defendants appeared
in court on Monday to face charges including genocide over the 1987-88
slaughter of Kurdish civilians.

The accused were brought before chief trial judge Abdallah al-Ameri, a
Shiite Arab with 25 years on the bench, and four of his colleagues at the
start of a trial which prosecutors hope will last for only four months.
