BAGHDAD, Nov 28 (AFP) - Shiites in the northern Iraqi town of Dujail on
Monday called for the execution of Saddam Hussein, as hundreds of supporters
in his hometown turned out to back the deposed dictator.

Some 200 people gathered in the center of Dujail on the day Saddam's trial
for crimes against humanity in Baghdad was to resume, carrying portraits of
townspeople executed by the former regime.

"We are calling for the execution of the dictator Saddam," read many of the
banners carried by the demonstrators, many of whom were parents of victims.

There was a higher security presence than normal in the town with increased
checkpoints around the streets.

Saddam and seven of his lieutenants are on trial for the massacre of 148
inhabitants of Dujail in 1982. They face the death penalty if convicted.

Meanwhile, some 500 people demonstrated in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit,
north of Baghdad, in support of the former dictator.

Amid a heavy security presence the demonstrators, including students,
carried pictures of Saddam and promised to sacrifice themselves, "blood and
soul" for the former dictator.

As protesters called the trial unjust, US military patrols could be seen in
the area.
