Statement of President Bush on the death by hanging of Saddam Hussein, as provided by the White House:

Today, Saddam Hussein was executed after receiving a fair trial — the kind of justice he denied the victims of his brutal regime.

Fair trials were unimaginable under Saddam Hussein's tyrannical rule. It is a testament to the Iraqi people's resolve to move forward after decades of oppression that, despite his terrible crimes against his own people, Saddam Hussein received a fair trial. This would not have been possible without the Iraqi people's determination to create a society governed by the rule of law.

Saddam Hussein's execution comes at the end of a difficult year for the Iraqi people and for our troops. Bringing Saddam Hussein to justice will not end the violence in Iraq, but it is an important milestone on Iraq's course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain and defend itself, and be an ally in the War on Terror.

We are reminded today of how far the Iraqi people have come since the end of Saddam Hussein's rule and that the progress they have made would not have been possible without the continued service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.

Many difficult choices and further sacrifices lie ahead. Yet the safety and security of the American people require that we not relent in ensuring that Iraq's young democracy continues to progress.

Yeah, I'm glad he's gone, but a bit let down that Saddam was made out to be a really bad man in the World, Crimes against Humanity and all, and Saddam gets off'd for killing a mere 148 people, and worse yet, Saddam killed those people while he was an Ally of Washington D.C.

Will we ever take responsibility for our actions in the World?

The U.S. Government worked overtime to keep Saddam alive back then, when he was weakened, and about to be overthrown by his own people, because Saddam was our boy in the War with Iran.
The U.S. Government (Executive Branch) illegally funneled monies to Saddam (and Weapons/Weapons Systems) because we backed him in a War agaisnt Iran, a War the US was looking for someone in the area to fight for us.
So the U.S. Government was really not all that worried about 148 Iraqis being killed for trying to take Saddam out, as a matter of fact, conventional wisdom would suggest that the U.S. Government would view the deaths of 148 potential Saddam killers as a good thing to have happen back in 1982.

A brave man fights his rival on equal terms. Saddams death was the killing of a helpless man, whatever he may have done in the past, it was a cowardly act. This is no reason to thank God! Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11. He was killed as personal revenge, for making the current President's father look a laughingstock to the world's informed population. Soldiers must expect to die in duty, but no one has the right to kill captives. Crimes against humanity must be punished, but executions of leaders who commit such crimes would only be valid, if all such leaders were put on trial. Where were the trials for Stalin and Benesch and how would Bush and Blair stand before an international tribunal?

bout time the guys dead now i want to see some pictures or better yet a video Happy New Year people!!!!!

Geez, such an old and nasty way to die. A bullet to the brain on sight would've been better.

Yes it would for Saddam personally - as Saddam considered himself as a soldier and requested a soldiers death during his trial, which is the bullet. The rope is used on simple theifs and lowlifes.

Now that christmas is over i see that george Bush Snr finally got his christmas present he always wanted

The Axis mass murderers were hanged. No reason to change the method now. He got more leniency than his victims who were usually buried dead and alive.

Uh...Got any video or picture of Saddam's execution? I only seen when they put the rope around his neck. Damn news.

He deserved to die cuz he killed lots of inocents but it was not a fair decision for him to be executed such an early date after the trial.

Iraqi executioners suck!

Albert Pierrepoint averaged less than 15 seconds from the time the condemned man left his cell until he he released the trap. His fastest was the execution of John Inglis in seven seconds.

They piddled around for about a minute. Poor tradecraft I think
