Russians too close for comfort for Belgian F-16s


Russian freight plane caused damage to Belgian fighter jets.

In the war against terror in Afghanistan three Belgian F-16s have been damaged on the tarmac at Kandahar Airport.

The Belgian fighter jets sustained the damage from stones thrown up into the air when a Russian freight plane came too close to the parked aircraft.

The Russian civilian plane made a mistake and taxied too near the Belgian F16s, blasting stones and sand into their engines.

The engines of the three aircraft were ripped to bits.

Belgian technicians were soon able to replace one of the engines, but replacements are needed for the two others.

These will be flown in on Monday by a Belgian C130 Hercules transport plane.

With one aircraft immediately repaired the Belgians were able to meet their commitment and had two fighter jets back in the air patrolling the airspace above Kandahar Airport on Saturday night.

Last year Belgium sent four F16 fighter jets to southern Afghanistan as part of the Nato mission in the country.

They have the task of protecting the airport in the southern Afghan city.

Why would the Russians want to disrupt Belgians in Afghanistan? If they were American fighters, id be more suspicious.

Unforutnately I dont speak Russian, I only know the tiniest bit [Seeing as im Serbian]. Id love to live there, though.

But id rather live in Brezhnevs/Kruschevs great SOVIET UNION than Putins/Medvedevs Russia.
 
Unless you are some sort of masochist, I think you'd be in for a nasty surprise.

I haven't been for a few years, but I'm told that life is no better for the man on the street today, (many say it's worse). I started going when Leonid was in power, and I'll still guarantee that you'd be back here so fast your rubber soled runners would strike sparks off the tarmac.

I worked on Russian crewed ships for 4 years, and went back and forth to Russia many times, so I've got a bit of an idea of what I'm talking about. The people I worked with were of predominately two types, they are either "The salt of the earth", or they are "the laziest most conniving "b@stards that ever had guts shovelled into them", it was my job to get rid of the latter, and I took great pride in it.

I talked to people that lived in Kruschevs and Brezhnevs great Soviet Union, and they tell me that as long as you WORKED, life was pretty good. My friends mother lived in Novosibirsk in the from the mid 50's, 60's then to the 70's. She said the same, as long as you worked and didnt do anything against the law, life was good and simple. She compared it to life in Australia today, and says that 'Novosibirsk during the 60's was more simple and easier than now. Sure, Australia and other capitalist countries are more 'glamourous' and nicer looking, but in the USSR we would always be sure that we had food, water, work, a house and good living conditions.'

Thats just one person that lived in the great Soviet Union that thinks positive about it. Ive talked to many others. Of course the great USSR had flaws, but all countries do. Personally I prefer Tito's Yugoslavia over Kruschevs/Brezhnevs USSR. I have talked to literally hundreds of people [mainly relatives and family friends] that lived there, and they say that compared to old SFRJ, Australia is a hole.

No offence intended, thats their comparison of a Constitutional-Monarchy and Capitalist society and a Socialist one.
 
Yeah the "good old days' selective memory hard at work.
That's why all those folks risked their lives jumping over the fence along the iron curtain over to Western Europe right? Because life was so good in the Soviet Union.
 
Notice they were the ones fooled by western propaganda. They thought they would drive Aston Martins and Porsches when they went to the west.
 
SO... About the aircraft... :)

It seems strange to me that a private craft was able to get that close to military air craft. Any speculation on how/why that could happen?

Put quite simply, "I guess it just depends what you are comparing it with." Carry your internal passport, live in the district you are told, accept the fact that most houses outside of cities having no power and often no running water.

I've not only talked to people, I've been there,... Leningrad, Moscow, Nakhodka Vladivostok, Kharbarovsk. I've flown Aeroflot (against my better judgement) more often than you've had hot breakfasts. I've also seen the prehistoric working conditions that all but the very privileged work under. The dirt, drunkenness the crime and how everything you touch is falling to pieces. Airlines, buses and trains that just run (and break down) if and when they want.

I have seen outside of the carefully presented tourist traps, I've seen how the people live from day to day. I've also had dealings with the corrupt officialdom trying to get passports for Russian Officers and Seamen.

I would suggest you ask those friends of yours why, "If it is so bloody good, why haven't they gone back to live there".

They came to Australia in the 80's, when the fool Gorbachev was ruining everything.

The people ive talked to say they had running water and electricity, but i guess it would be different in Siberia [So cold..]

My friends mum reckons that working conditions for her were fine. She did what she had to do, and didnt complain. Only bad thing, she reckons, was that metal sometimes rusted during winter. But if they got TOO bad, they were replaced within a week or two.

And yes, their airlines and airports were crap, i admit x]
