what is new Russians are always foot dragging and reneging on deals all the time... One thing Russians are known for is always trying to play both sides against each other, Russia time and again announced they will fulfill the deal only to back track again and then to only restate the deal was good only to renege again... This game the Russians always play not only against Iran but different countries all the time will in the long run blow up on their face as they lose competition to China just like the West is losing competition to China all over the world from Latin America to Africa to the Middle East and the Caucuses. China is a country that puts their own interests above politics and what others want it to do thats why more and more countries want to deal with China instead of the West and Russia...
A country that has a contractual obligation prior to any sanctions is obligated to fulfill their obligations all these years the Russians have been dragging their feet only to wait for the right time when they have something to use as an excuse to back out of the deal... The UN sanctions does not cover any ban against the sale of defensive weapons such as the S-300 so this ban has no legal merits, if the Russians want to talk about the more comprehensive sanctions the EU and America put on Iran well then those are no UN sponsored sanctions and Russia has no legal obligation to obey sanctions a 3rd country imposed... But Russia has just lost their biggest Market in the Middle East and and they just alienated their strongest Ally in the Middle East this is detrimental to their own interests because in the future Iran will sign billions upon billions of dollars worth of deals with countries like China and Turkey and Russia will not see a dime.

I think it's about Putin and Medvedev, man. And the 2012 election. The tandem is no longer working. They are starting to compete for popularity and power. Putin supported this deal. So Medvedev must disrupt it... I don't know... Weird system of governance, that's all I can really say.
I have reading up on Iran's scientific growth, these sanctions of the last 30 years has made Iran self sufficient on many fields they are today the fastest growing country in the world when it comes to the fields of science and research. These Persians are more resourceful than you can imagine when one door closes they open 10 more doors for themselves they are no joke and not a nation to be taken lightly, this ban will only make Iran's resolve that much stronger and will sooner or later develop their own version of the S-300 like China has done.
Also Iran has promised they will take legal actions against the Russian government for reneging on contractual agreement and also the Iranians don't take to kindly to a slap on the face they will retaliate against Russia for this mistake by stopping supporting Russia in the former Soviet Union against the West also by banning Russian companies from doing business in Iran because the Russians can't have it both ways by banning the sale of defensive weapons to an ally and expect business to be as usual when it comes to Russian private and state companies operating in Iran.

One has to remember that Russia is no fan of Iran either. They will sell them weapons up to a point, and it looks like the point just got crossed.
Why do I say this? Two reasons.
Iran has been linked to the Islamic rebels in Chechnya and Dagestan and other provinces and countries in Eastern Europe with rebellious Muslim populations. Iran is accused of providing training and weapons to such groups or at the very least turning a blind eye to those that do with Irans borders.

In recent years Russia has been trying to mend fences with Israel, partly due to its own large Jewish population and against the shared concern of Islamic extremism.

Yes you do need her support mate, Iran is the strongest ally Russia has in the Middle East, they are also your biggest market in the Middle East and your biggest supporter in the former Soviet Union against the West. You speak of the present but look past the present and see the ramifications it will have on your relations with Iran when in retaliation Iran sues the Russian government and bans all your companies and China and Turkey fill the vacuum... The Chinese are a lot more logical, prudent, and look after their own economical well being and don't politicize contracts...

Hell, Avigdor Liberman is a Russian Jew from Moldova who, when he met Putin and Medvedev in Moscow, spoke with them in Russian, without translators. During Russia's last Presidential Election, 15 polling stations opened up in Israel. And 90,000 Israeli citizens live in Moscow. You are right. In fact, this is why we often refer to Israel as the '16th Republic', as in, along with 15 Russian-speaking former Soviet countries, ourselves included. I think it is good we are making friends with them again. They are, indeed, our brothers.

Let me tell you something I am an educated person and I don't believe the Media hype about Iran and nukes, during the Iran-Iraq war Iran was attacked with chemical weapons but the Ayatollah banned his army from retaliating in kind out of religious conviction, he has made a fatwa before he passed away that Iran can never develop nuclear weapons. So the real reason why they using the nuclear issue as a smoke screen is the fact that Iran is a fast growing country to becoming the superpower of the region, they are already the dominant power in that region. Like I said with Iran's growth rate they are due to become the China of the Middle East and Israel being the small country with limited population it has cannot match Iran's growth rate so the Israelis and the Americans want to nip Iran in the bud so it does not become the dominant power and the power broker of that region.

Also, You talk about USA and Israel as main players in that region. You forget two more: Saudi Arabia, now being armed up to the teeth by the US, and Turkey, a NATO member (soon to be EU member as well, probably).
besides this nuclear reactor where these 3,000 Russians are working and such what other things has Russia helped with Iran? Not with their medicine, nanotech, space, etc so you going to tell me its because of Russia that Iran is 11 times above the world average in development? Baloney....Turkey is friendly with Iran now and has recently removed Iran as one of the nations that is a threat to Turkish security, Saudi Arabia is a basket case they can't even fly or maintain none of that hardware they can't even come close to matching Iranian ingenuity and technical prowess they need foreign companies to maintain everything from their aircraft to tanks to vehicles to helicopters to their ships to their issued rifles Saudi Arabia is not a power by a long shot but a basket case that is propped up, so that leaves Israel and America and Israel can't match Iran in funds, development, population, Iran's university students alone number 1/3 of Israel's population.

I actually know why this happened.
I believe this is related to the Russian military spending spree in Europe.
Fact is that France can't sell the Mistrel class ships to Russia at the same time Russia sells S-300 missiles to Iran.
Russia had to choose whether to sell weapons to Iran OR be able to buy European and Israeli weapon systems.
Suffice it to say that Russia may have political issues buying European weaponry, but by the same token, western European countries have political issues selling weapons to Iran-supporters.
Know what I think? If Putin is the way I think he is, as soon as we get the Mistrals from the French, and the drones from Israel, we'd pull right back. Seriously, I gurrantee you that either Putin will withdraw the ban after he becomes President in 2012, or will force Medvedev to do it even before that
As an educated American I can see through all the propaganda, lies, smoke screens the Western media creates about Iran and just look at the cold hard facts and statistics myself and I must say that for an Iran that is portrayed as the way it is in the western media little do people know about the resilience, independent mindedness and resourcefulness of the Iranian nation... For an Iran that has been under sanctions for 30 years they are so far ahead in development cuz they know they can't rely on anyone else but themselves... The Saudis who have money out the ass and who have way more access to western technology can't still manage to get anywhere with self sufficiency... Saudis are just spoiled kids with fancy toys who still need good old daddy to fix or replace those shiny toys when they break down Lol
