MOSCOW_Russia's foreign minister warned Tuesday that Iraq could split into
different states if its ethnic groups fail to unite, Russian news agencies
reported.

"If there is no breakthrough and real unification does not start, this
situation will become reality," Sergey Lavrov was quoted as saying by the
ITAR-Tass news agency.

RIA-Novosti also quoted Lavrov as saying that economic assistance to Iraq
was pointless while the violence there continues.

U.S.-led efforts to stabilize the country have suffered major setbacks
recently, with rising violence among various ethnic and religious groups,
and attacks on U.S. forces making October one of the deadliest months for
the U.S. military since the March 2003 invasion.

While Russia has no military forces there, four Russian diplomats were
abducted and killed in Baghdad in June.

Analysts have increasingly warned that Iraq is on the brink of breaking
apart, with the majority Shiite population, the Sunni minority and the
Kurdish population in the north potentially splitting into separate states.
