Hi,

NEW DELHI, India (AFP) – Russia and India signed an agreement Friday for the construction of as many as 16 Russian nuclear reactors at three different sites in India, Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said.

The agreement "foresees the construction of up to 16 nuclear energy units at three sites in the future," Ivanov told reporters on the sidelines of talks between Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh.

Earlier, Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's state atomic agency, said six of the reactors would be built by 2017

Russia is already constructing two nuclear power units in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Earlier Friday, Putin described nuclear energy as one of the "most important and promising areas of cooperation" between Russia and India.

He also acknowledged growing competition after India sealed a landmark deal with the United States in 2008 that allowed India access to civilian nuclear energy despite its refusal to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

I would strongly recommend that the buyer also negotiates for about 50 - 100 new hospitals that specialise in treating ilnesses associated with radioactivity.

India has been operating Nuclear reactors since 1969 , Why do you think They would all start leaking Radiation.

There are currently 18 Operational Reactors and more than 5 are under construction and 40 more are planned.

  • India has a flourishing and largely indigenous nuclear power program and expects to have 20,000 MWe nuclear capacity on line by 2020 and 63,000 MWe by 2032. It aims to supply 25% of electricity from nuclear power by 2050.
  • Because India is outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty due to its weapons program, it has been for 34 years largely excluded from trade in nuclear plant or materials, which has hampered its development of civil nuclear energy until 2009.
  • Due to these trade bans and lack of indigenous uranium, India has uniquely been developing a nuclear fuel cycle to exploit its reserves of thorium.
  • Now, foreign technology and fuel are expected to boost India's nuclear power plans considerably. All plants will have high indigenous engineering content.
  • India has a vision of becoming a world leader in nuclear technology due to its expertise in fast reactors and thorium fuel cycle.

I think he means because they are Russian. People seem to not trust Russian nuclear power plants that much since Chernobyl.

Arent they supposed to be building the Nuclear Plants in Iran that got the White House all upset?

Exactly, there was a TV documentary made during the days of Perestroika called "Russia's Nuclear Legacy".

It showed working reactors that are only staffed by men over 55 years of age, because they reason, that in 30 years most of them will be dead anyway. Others where the staff must wear full radiological protection to access many of the day to day controls. There were access tunnels under reactor rooms that had to be continuously sprayed and floors flushed with water to flush away leaking radioactive coolant. Many others had to have complete staff change overs every year or so due to the operators having received their recommended total dose.

Anyone want to bet on how long it will take for India to realize it's been Russia's favorite sap err.. business partner for the past few decades?
