MOSCOW - Russian arms exports are set to soar to a record $8 billion by the end of 2008, a senior defense official said Dec. 4.
Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy director of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, told the Itar-Tass news agency that a defense deal between Moscow and Saudi Arabia last July made a significant contribution to the record exports.

"It's a country normally oriented toward the United States, Great Britain and France. On this occasion, Saudi Arabia has become our new partner," Dzirkaln said.
Dzirkaln said Russia also retained strong ties on defense with its traditional trade partners: India, Algeria, Turkey, Italy and Greece.
A study conducted by Itar-Tass said Russia could benefit from further growth in the international arms market, estimating that its export sales potential could eventually reach as much as $12 billion to $13 billion a year.
Russia exported more than $7 billion worth of arms in 2007, compared with $6.5 billion the previous year.
