As a result of Egypt permitting free travel across the Rafiah border, thousands of weapons were brought into Palestinian Authority (PA) controlled Gaza, Israeli security officials reported earlier in the week.
The much increased availability of automatic weapons, officials add, has driven down street prices. Now PA residents can buy an AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifle for NIS 4,500, a considerable drop in price from the previous NIS 9,100. Other now-more-affordable means of 'armed resistance' include hand grenades, at NIS 500 instead of NIS 1,300 and bullets, now NIS 8 instead of NIS 30.
As a result of the wide-open border existing between Gaza and Egypt, a massive amount of weapons and ammunition were brought into the PA area from Sinai, including RPG launchers and other anti-tank rockets.
According to Diskin, thousands of automatic weapons are now in Gaza along with 1.5 million rounds and ammunition. This in addition to hundreds of rocket launchers, adding some of the weapons are intended for use to perpetrate attacks inside pre-1967 Green Line Israel.
