CHICAGO — The Yankees started their toughest stretch of the season with a disheartening loss Tuesday night.
Mariano Rivera blew the save in the ninth inning then Jermaine Dye won the game for the Chicago White Sox in the 11th as the Yankees were beaten, 6-5.
Tadahito Iguchi reached on a single off the glove of second baseman Robinson Cano. Scott Proctor (4-3) walked Jim Thome before Dye singled to center with one out.
Bobby Jenks (3-3) went 2 2/3 innings for the win.
The Yankees stayed two games ahead of Boston in the AL East as the Red Sox were beaten in Kansas City.
With the score tied 4-4, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen treated the eighth inning like the World Series as he used three relief pitchers. Each contributed to the Yankees scoring the go-ahead run.
Derek Jeter singled and Bobby Abreu walked off Matt Thornton. Alex Rodriguez had a single off Mike MacDougal that loaded the bases. Left-hander Neal Cotts then came in and hit Jason Giambi in the right elbow with a pitch to force in a run.
The Yankees missed a chance to score in the ninth as Cano led off with a double but was left stranded at third base.
The missed opportunity proved significant as the Yankees handed only a one-run lead to Rivera in the ninth inning.
He got ahead of Paul Konerko 1-2 but left a pitch over the plate and the first baseman drove it into the stands in center field. It was Rivera's first blown save since June 17.
The Yankees gave starter Chien-Ming Wang a 2-0 lead thanks to the work of their trade deadline pickups. Abreu had an RBI single in the first inning and Craig Wilson his first home run as a Yankee in the second.
But Wang gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings.
Three of the runs came in the second. Konerko and Jim Thome had back-to-back doubles for Chicago's first run. Wang got two outs but then allowed a two-run single by No. 9 hitter Alex Cintron.
The Yankees got the lead back in the third inning when Rodriguez broke out of a 1-for-17 slump with a two-run homer to left.
Wang couldn't hold the lead again as Joe Crede homered for the White Sox in the fourth.
Ron Villone, Jose Veras, Mike Myers and Kyle Farnsworth followed Wang to the mound. They combined on three no-hit innings.
Cano was 3-for-5 in his first game since straining a hamstring on June 25.
