Remembering the victims of Nazi and Japanese atrocities

The bombing of Dresden was arrenged with the forth coming Russian attack in mind. Dresden was a major hub in the rail network. Are people now saying that it was wrong to carry the fight to Germany, like Japan they could have always surredered and brought a halt to it all. Germany decided that it was going to fight to the end regardless of what it cost her and if the Atom bomb had been ready in time that also would have been dropped on Germany, or so all the reports on this matter indicate.
If by bombing Dresden it saved any alliied lives then it was worth it, and lets face it war materials were being made all over the place.

With a civilian population geared to the war effort then they become targets. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Unfortunately not even Churchill accepted this...

Winston Churchill, memorandum to Air Marshall Arthur Harris (28th March 1945)

It seems to me that the moment has come when the question of bombing of German cities simply for the sake of increasing the terror, should be reviewed. Otherwise we shall come into control of an utterly ruined land. We shall not, for instance, be able to get housing material out of Germany for our own needs because some temporary provision would have to be made for the Germans themselves. I feel the need for more precise concentration upon military objectives, such as oil and communications behind the immediate battle-zone, rather than on mere acts of terror and wanton destruction.

By February 1945 everyone except Hitler knew the war was finished and to that degree Churchill points this out, as for Dresden being a rail and communications hub well it probably was but by this stage in the war German controlled territory was so miniscule that they didnt need trains and telephones as they could have walked from the Eastern to the Western front in less than a day.

Their job was to save as many lives of their men that they could. If one life was lost because of their decision not to bomb Dresden then they failed in that task. It is that sacred trust that leaders and commanders hold.
