THE remains of two soldiers killed in the Vietnam War 42 years ago will finally arrive home this week.
Lance Corporal Richard "Tiny" Parker, 24, and Private Peter Gillson, 20, were declared missing in action in November 1965 while serving in South Vietnam with A Company of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment.
A group called Operation Aussies Home spent four years searching for the pair's remains. They were killed in a battle in Dong Nai Province, east of Saigon.
The group used ground-penetrating radar to pinpoint soil disturbances indicating secret grave sites. The remains, found in a shallow grave on April 16, will be returned on Wednesday under military escort for a formal repatriation ceremony at RAAF Base Richmond.
Veterans Affairs Minister Bruce Billson said an Australian forensic team worked closely with Vietnamese authorities.
"It is wonderful that these collaborative efforts will bring closure to the families," Mr Billson said.
