ASHBURN, Va. - The Washington Redskins finished restructuring Mark Brunell's contract Wednesday, creating more space under the salary cap while ensuring he will return to the team next season.
The team also re-signed offensive lineman Mike Pucillo and released tight end Christian Fauria.
The moves were part of a furious final push to prepare the Redskins for the start of free agency Friday, when the team is expected to begin its yearly aggressive courtship of top players to fill its needs. The team has been talking to several veterans about renegotiating their deals, while others could be released Thursday.
"There's a lot up in the air right now," coach Joe Gibbs said. "Most of it, to be truthful, is up in the air."
Brunell had been scheduled to count $6.7 million under the cap in 2007, an unaffordable amount for a No. 2 quarterback. He will return as the backup to Jason Campbell, who became the starter midway through the 2006 season.
Cornerback Shawn Springs is now the top uncertainty on the roster. The Redskins would like to reduce his cap number of $7.4 million, and he could be cut if no deal is reached.
The Redskins are expected to pursue a pair of free agents from Buffalo - cornerback Nate Clements and linebacker London Fletcher - once the free agent market opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
Pucillo played 11 games as a reserve last season, often as an extra tight end on running plays. He joined the Redskins last year after previous stints with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns.
Fauria also joined the Redskins last year and played in nine games, making two catches for 17 yards. He severely sprained his ankle in November and ended the season on injured reserve.
