Curt Schilling gave up nine doubles and a homer, and the Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to beat the visiting Red Sox 5-4 for a surprising three-game sweep.
Reggie Sanders doubled three times as the Royals, with the worst record in the majors, sent the Red Sox to their first five-game losing streak since 2004.
Boston began the day a season-high three games behind New York in the AL East.
Schilling (14-5) led 4-2 going into the eighth but failed to become the majors' first 15-game winner.
Mike Sweeney and Mark Teahen hit consecutive doubles to make it 4-3. Emil Brown walked and Sanders tied it with his double.
Ryan Shealy's infield single, the only hit by the Royals that did not go for extra bases, pushed across the go-ahead run and finished Schilling.
Andrew Sisco (1-2) got the win with one inning of relief. Ambiorix Burgos got his 18th save in 28 chances.
Wily Mo Pena hit a three-run homer in the seventh for a 4-2 Boston lead. Kevin Youkilis doubled leading off, Mike Lowell singled and Pena hit a 429-foot home run off Runelvys Hernandez's 0-2 pitch.
YANKEES at WHITE SOX: Alex Rodriguez made another throwing error and the Chicago White Sox took advantage of two key mistakes, beating the New York Yankees 5-4 and winning two of three from the AL East leaders.
Javier Vazquez (11-6) got his 100th career win in a game that started after a rain delay of nearly 1 1/2 hours.
ROCKIES at DODGERS: Kenny Lofton singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers moved into first place in the NL West, defeating the Colorado Rockies 4-3.
PADRES at METS: David Wright broke a seventh-inning tie with an RBI double and the New York Mets defeated San Diego 7-3, completing a three-game sweep and opening a season-high 14-game lead in the NL East.
With their fifth straight win, the Mets dropped the Padres into a first-place tie in the NL West with idle Arizona and Los Angeles, which plays Colorado later. Orlando Hernandez (8-8) won his fourth straight decision, allowing three runs and four hits in seven innings. El Duque, acquired in May from Arizona, is 6-4 with the Mets and has not lost in six starts since June 30.
PIRATES at ASTROS: Roger Clemens got his 345th win, allowing one run in six innings to lead Houston over the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 to complete a three-game sweep for the Astros.
Clemens (4-4) struck out five and allowed four hits, yielding two runs or fewer for the eighth time in 10 starts.
His 2.32 ERA since June 22 leads NL starters.
ANGELS at INDIANS: Ryan Garko hit his first career homer and drove in four runs to help Cliff Lee win for the first time in nearly a month, leading the Cleveland Indians over the Los Angeles Angels 14-2.
Garko hit a three-run double that capped Cleveland's seven-run fourth inning, then opened the sixth with a 431-foot drive to centre.
MARINERS at RANGERS: Mark Teixeira and Michael Young hit three-run doubles in consecutive innings and the Texas Rangers beat Seattle 8-2 to move a game ahead of the Mariners and out of last place in the AL West.
Teixeira's bases-clearing double in the sixth put the Rangers ahead 3-2.
CUBS at BREWERS: Doug Davis won his third straight decision, leading the Milwaukee Brewers over Chicago 8-6 and handing the Cubs consecutive losses for the first time in three weeks.
Davis (8-6) was given a seven-run lead, and he struck out eight in seven innings, allowing four runs, eight hits and three walks.
CARDINALS at REDS: Scott Spiezio hit the last of the Cardinals' three homers off Bronson Arroyo, who changed his hairstyle but not his luck, and St. Louis gained a soothing series split with a 6-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
MARLINS at NATIONALS: Josh Willingham's four hits included a homer, fellow rookie Dan Uggla added a two-run shot and Florida beat Washington 9-6.
Another rookie, shortstop Hanley Ramirez, made a leaping grab of pinch-hitter Alex Escobar's liner up the middle with two runners on for the final out.
