Veteran pitcher David Wells is returning home — again.
The Boston Red Sox dealt Wells to the San Diego Padres on Thursday, marking the second time the veteran left-hander will play for his hometown team.
The Red Sox will receive a player to be named later as part of the deal.
"He's a Padre," Wells's agent, Gregg Clifton, told the Associated Press. "He's thrilled to be heading back to San Diego and, hopefully, helping get them into the playoffs."
The 43-year-old Wells, who played for the Padres in 2004, was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays in Boston.
Wells joins a San Diego team that is in the thick of a heated playoff race. Going into Thursday night, the Padres were leading the National League wild-card race by a half game over the Philadelphia Phillies, and trailed the NL West division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers by three games.
To be eligible for a team's post-season roster, a player had to be in a club's organization by the end of Thursday.
Wells, who has battled knee problems most of this season, sports a 2-3 record in eight starts for Boston with a 4.97 earned-run average.
Wells was on the Toronto Blue Jays' World Series championship teams in 1992 and 1993.
