The recruit and the cigarette

BritinBritain

Per Ardua Ad Astra
Myself and other NCO's were teaching young recruits the mysteries of foot drill. After marching the youngsters up and down for a while we decided to give them a break, saying "OK break off for a ten minute smoke."

We (the drill instructors) were chatting to one side when we noticed a young recruit coughing his heart and lungs up. We went over to the young recruit and one NCO asked, "Are you ok lad, why are you coughing?"

Still coughing and with tears running down his face managed to gasp the reply "I don't smoke Corporal."

We looked at each other and then he was asked, "Then why the f:cens: are you smoking?"

"Because I thought I had to," wheezed the recruit.

Oh man... yeah I can totally see this happening and it did happen.
You have to be really precise as to what you order or that's all they'll do. I suggested, "pick up a book and read or something." And there they were, all of them, reading.
