BAQUBA - Iraqi insurgents killed five police Thursday, security and
medical sources said, in the latest in a series of deadly clashes between
Sunni rebels and an embattled rapid reaction unit.

Police from the specialised squad ran into gunfire during a raid against
insurgents just south of the city of Baquba, officials said. The five dead
officers included a lieutenant. Nine more were wounded.

The Baquba region is in the grip of a vicious sectarian conflict between
extremist Sunni and Shiite factions, while the police are often targeted by
insurgents opposed to Iraq's US-backed government.

Last week, 17 trainee members of the rapid reaction unit were killed in an
ambush on a road near the city, triggering a security clampdown and a
string of bloody clashes.
