OCEANSIDE, Calif. — More than 100 single sailors with the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan traded their shore-side barracks for ship berthing to make some room for fellow sailors and Navy families who have had to evacuate because of the wildfires burning in the San Diego region.
About 135 sailors or their families assigned to the nuclear-powered carrier were directly affected by the ongoing wildfires, Lt. Ron Flanders, Ronald Reagan’s public affairs officer, said Tuesday morning, where the ship was operating with duty sections only.
As of Tuesday morning, 22 families have settled into the barracks space in Building 783 at North Island Naval Air Station, and more were expected throughout the day, Flanders said. “We have evacuated our barracks. They have returned to the ship so they can free up rooms for the families,” he said. “Our number one priority is our sailors and their families.”
“In this time of crisis, we’re all in this together,” said Capt. Terry Kraft, Reagan’s skipper. “Our sailors want to help, and we’re working with 3rd Fleet and Navy Region Southwest to provide whatever assistance we can to our community.”
Reagan remains at its North Island berthing, where it’s wrapping up a six-month availability period.
“We are establishing a list of available rooms in private homes for other folks that have been on the ship who have been affected” by the fires, Flanders said. “It’s sort of an all-hands effort.”
Dozens of Reagan sailors are helping with local evacuation efforts in the county, where more than a half-million residences have been ordered to evacuate amid growing wildfires.
The ship’s supply department has been collecting blankets, food, water, clothing and other supplies for evacuees, and the medical department is preparing to augment the branch medical clinic at North Island.
On Monday, 42 Reagan sailors volunteered to help evacuated county residents at Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers and the county’s largest evacuation center, and another 15 sailors joined in the volunteer effort at the stadium on Tuesday, Flanders said.
As of Tuesday, 56 Reagan sailors have been trained by the American Red Cross in emergency shelter management.
The ship’s firefighting teams “are standing by to assist if called,” he added.
