Quite interesting. I'm still a skeptic on the Eurofighter. I noticed one thing though, why are the two aircraft named fights when they both have different missions and roles?

This has always bothered me, As far as i know the F-117 has no air to air capabilities so why does it carry the Fighter designation instead of the bomber or B-117.

It was assigned the 'F' and 'Fighter' designation during the 1980's in order to fool the Soviet KGB. Remember, we didnt know about its full capabilities un the Gulf War.

To All:

Isnt it slightly premature to rate aircraft that are not actually operational.
For example much is still unknown about the F/A-22, the F-35, the MiG-47. The French Rafeal only became operational this year and the Typhoon isnt even out yet.

If I recall correctly, it can carry AIM-9 sidewinders.

Plz someone corrects me if I am wrong.

It is a hard choice, really!

But lets see

F 18 Hornet
F 15 Eagle
F 14A/D tomcat for its strong AWG/9 radar
F 35 JSF
F 22 Raptor (however it seems it does have many problems now)
Mirage 2000
Su-27 *(although I believe russian jets are crap due to their dependency on ground control)
Let me put in F 4 Phantom for its brilliant background
Rafale
F16 Falcon = MIG 29

I guess so!

F-15 is still the best strike fighter of the whole US Armed Forces.

And personally, I think there is no better jet than F 14 in the world ;)

:rambo:

I hate threads like this with a passion but il post anyway.

there is only a few that i like
1)Cessna
Let's narrow that down a bit. Which one of the following did you mean?
Cessna 120, Cessna 140, Cessna 150, Cessna 152, Cessna 170, Cessna 172, Cessna 175, Cessna 177, Cessna 180, Cessna 182, Cessna 185, Cessna 188 AgWagon & AgTruck, Cessna 190, Cessna 195, Cessna 205, 206 Stationair and 207, Cessna 208, Cessna 210, Cessna 303, Cessna 305 Birddog, Cessna 310, Cessna 335, Cessna 337, Cessna 340, Cessna 401, Cessna 404, Cessna 414, Cessna 421, Cessna 402, Cessna 425 Conquest I, Cessna 441 Conquest II, Cessna 500, Cessna 501, Cessna 510, Cessna 550, Cessna 551, Cessna 560, Cessna 650, Cessna Citation X, Cessna T-37???
:p :p :p

2)Lear Jet
Great one. Surely invincible. Terrify the enemy by having no obvious sign of weapons ... and heck, no weapons period. Talk about indimidation!! (Am I referencing the right Lear Jet BTW??)
3)Sopwith Camel
Go after that F-18E with a prop biplane fighter. It's the last thing they'll expect and you will surely destroy them!
4)...am i on the right forum
Obviously.

Ehem! Right. My choices:
1.) F-22 Raptor
2.) F-35 JSF
3.) SU-47 Berkut
4.) Eurofighter
5.) Rafalle

Of the tried and true choices:
1.) F-15E
2.) F-18E
3.) Mig-29
4.) Mirage 2000-5
5.) SU-37
6.) F-14
7.) F-16C
8.) Tornado

No idea why anyone would pick F-117 or A-10 for best fighter since neither would stand a chance in a fight with any of the above (whose specific mission is air superiority.) Their great in their respective roles, but neither is worth a crap for pure air superiority.

F/A-22 Raptor was built to have already engaged an enemy before the target was aware that the F/A-22 was there. Essentially, by the time your radar can detect the Raptor, the Raptor fired a missile thirty seconds ago. Also, the ability to supercruise and attack ground targets puts the F/A-22 at the top.

The Eurofighter is an extremely manueverable aircraft. However it doesn't have the stealth or ground attack capabilities of the Raptor.

The A-10 is not a fighter. As evidenced by the Attack designation. The A-10 is a very capable ground attack platform. However against a modern fighter, it's far too slow to really stand a chance.

The F-117 was designated a fighter because the head of the project's development wanted hotshot pilots to fly the new plane. Hotshot pilots don't like planes with a B infront of them. Lastly, the F-117 has no air to air capability.

Air to air

1 F22
2 Rafale F2
3 Mig 31 FoxHound
4 Typhoon
5 Mirage 2000-9

Air to ground
1 Rafale F2/F35

Multirole
1. RafaleF2/F35

The truth and nothing but the truth... not marketing...
That was an info from defence specialists all over the world.

A friend of mine stationed at Tinker AFB told me of one of the funniest things he'd ever seen. After a combination of stupid mistakes in piloting and pure dumb luck, an A-10 scored a kill on an F15E in a training. The computer determined that the A-10's main gun would have sawed the F15E in half. This was about as unlikely of an occurrance as the Loch Ness Monster, Santa Claus and Elvis combining for a world tour next week and I am told they have a great laught at the whole thing. The F15E pilot was quite embarrassed. Perhaps that adds some perspective to why the A-10 really doesn't merit consideration as a "fighter."

If you're asking about the best Air vs Ground aircraft in existence, the A-10 probably tops my list.
