Rank Hath Its Privileges...

MY YEAR IN VIETNAM OVER, I boarded a charter jet at Bien Hoa Air Base for the trip home. I was the only officer on the plane, and I struck up a conversation with my seatmates, two enlisted men. As we were served our in-flight meal, one of the soldiers said to me, "It's sure nice sitting next to a full colonel." I had only a few moments to ponder what a positive influence I'd been when, between bites, he added, "We get fed first."

In-flight meals okay, but "RHIP" also stands for "Rank Has Its Problems". Many's the time the cooks ran out of food for my battery in the field before I, as an officer and fed last, could have anything to eat. Not that I'm complaining. That's how it should be. Just stating the flip side for those who may not know different.

True that, sir. Even in my civilian job, I find myself making sure all of my staff get through the cafeteria line first...
