It wasn't a grenade, it was IR strobe light. This means that the light is not visible with the naked eye, you have to be wearing NVGs to be able to see it. Therefore, since the Somali fighters lacked NVG's they were oblivious to the fact they were marked, and since the little bird pilots were wearing NVGs, they could easily identify the strobe as well as the Somali positions.
