Oh boy a joint US/French/British task force might just make the Iranians flinch.

That would be huge since the Du Gaul is widely believed to be rather permanently stuck at port

I know that the Du Gaul is considerd to be a lesson on how not to build a carrier but i didnt know it was stuck at port.

Last I heard they where trying to keep her as safe as possible unless something big came up... Albeit my expertise in french naval strategy is a tad limmited. :)

I do want to say that GlobalSecurity.org has absolutely nothing on the De Gaulle being deployed so I'm skeptical.

Folks, The De Gualle has been deployed for some time now. The only thing missing are her Rafale airwings, she has recieved some but not her full 40+ complement.

Haven't heard anything in the press here either about a move...

Whispering Death

Actually its much earlier than that. They have been fighting Islamic Fundimentalism since the Algerian War in the 1960's.

French warship to join anti-terror operation

PARIS, Feb 18: France will deploy its only aircraft carrier in the Middle East and Indian Ocean as part of international efforts to bring stability to Afghanistan, a Defence Ministry spokesman said on Saturday.

The 3 1/2-month mission by the Charles de Gaulle and an escort flotilla is to begin on Friday in support of the US-led counter terrorism operation Enduring Freedom and UN-mandated peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan, spokesman Jean-Francois Bureau told The Associated Press.

The warship, which is to head toward the Indian Ocean on March 1, is scheduled to conduct exercises with military forces from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, India and Oman, he said.

The Charles de Gaulle, accompanied by the British frigate H.M.S. Lancaster and four other escort ships, will carry 28 aircraft including 14 Super-Etendard strike aircraft and eight Rafale combat fighters.

The ship is to depart on Friday from the Mediterranean city of Toulon, and about 3,000 sailors are to take part in the mission, Bureau said.—AP

The de gault only carries 8 fighters, I was under the impression it wasnt much smaller than the nimitz.

Are the Super Etendards being phased out in favor of the Rafale, until they are completely replaced aboard the Charles De Gaulle?

Hmm, Good to know. the press is quiet here...

Rabs

Yes The Charles de Gaulle is much smaller. She is only 38000 tons (about same size as a WWII Essex Class) vs 102000 tons of a Nimitz class. She carries 40 aircraft (vs 90 on the Nimitz) and is marginally slower 27 knots (vs 30 Knots). The one advantage she has over the Nimitz is menueveability, she can make much quicker and sharper turns. Needless to say the French will NOT be building a 2nd...

Yes the Rafale will replace the Super Etendre IV eventually. The government has been having some budgetary problems for the Rafale so the De Gaulle hasn't recieved her full squandons. I believe she has 1 of 3 with the other two coming soon...

For the lighter side, heres a joke that ran in a French Newspaper. The sign read 'Slow, Work Ahead'

Nothing has ever been in the same league as the nimitz. That ship is really quite rediculous. The Du Gaulle looked like a solid design, I hope its replacement succeeds in being the most powerful platform in all Europe.

There wont be a replacement, because they have solved more or less all the construction problems now. The French and British are going to co-build a carrier, it will be a new design from scratch...
