This is a true story.

In case you don't know, our heir to the throne, Prince Charles, owns the Duchy of Cornwall, with masses of horticultural and farm-producing issues. He also has fantastic gardens; he is famous for talking to his plants, he claims they thrive on it, and the idea has grown that this is due to both the encouragement and the carbon dioxide emitted in doing so.

Yesterday one of our favourite chat-show presenters,Alan Titmarsh ,who had been a great celebrity gardener through his life, was interviewing a couple of celebrities and the subject cropped up.

Then one of them asked Alan - 'did you ever talk to your plants'?
Well, he said, When I was a lad I was taken off by the old head-gardener to help with my first job, planting a tree.

When we had planted the young tree, I made to go and wash my spade. 'Whoa' shouted the boss, 'where are you off to?' 'To clean up' says I.

'No you don't, until we have finished the job'.

'What's to do'?

'We have to talk to the tree'.

And then he and I took two steps back and looked at it, and he shouted:-

"GROW - YOU BASTARD- GROW!!'
