Ok i just saw the question and I have got use it as a trivia question.

NAME THE ONLY US PRESIDENT EVER TO SERVE IN COMBAT AS AN ENLISTED MAN. (A.K.A. He never became an officer).

By the way mmarsh, I looked it up an Buchanan volunteered in the War of 1812 and participated in the defense of Baltimore. Good question.

I didnt know that, but I do know the answer to your question.

Andrew Jackson. He and his brother were captured by the British during the Revolution and sent to a POW camp. He was released due to smallpox which killed his brother.
