LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Gerald Ford, 92, has been taken to a California hospital for tests, his spokesperson said in a statement on Tuesday.

"President Ford was admitted to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California. He is undergoing medical tests and will be released when they have been completed," the statement said.

It was not clear what health problems prompted Ford's trip to the hospital in the desert east of Los Angeles. Ford suffered a mild stroke about five years ago and was taken to a hospital in 2003 suffering from dizzy spells after playing golf in the heat.

Ford took office in August 9, 1974, when Richard Nixon resigned amid the Watergate scandal. Nixon had named Ford as vice president to replace Spiro Agnew, who also had stepped down.

In 1976, Ford lost the presidential election to Democrat Jimmy Carter. Ford later served on several corporate boards and toured the lecture circuit before retiring to the California desert community of Rancho Mirage, near Palm Springs.
