PORTSMOUTH – The city is preparing to celebrate tomorrow's historic Navy commissioning of the USS New Hampshire submarine.
The commissioning ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where the Virginia-class sub has sat pier side since its crew arrived last Sunday.
While all tickets to the shipyard ceremony have been handed out, the public will still be able to view the commissioning live on a jumbotron screen provided by FairPoint Communications that will be set up across the water at Prescott Park.
Free parking will be available at Pease Tradeport, where free shuttle buses will transport spectators to and from the park.
Highway signs and signs around Pease will direct people to the parking. The buses will run throughout the day beginning at 7 a.m.
Meanwhile, the USS New Hampshire Community Commissioning Committee is nearing the end of its fund-raising efforts as activities to honor the sub's crew and welcome their families have begun.
The committee raised $247,000 in cash contributions for celebrations marking the commissioning. Local businesses and civic organizations have donated another $100,000. Nearly $3,000 was raised from the purchases of the official USS New Hampshire Commissioning Celebration button and other commemorative items. The items can still be purchased on the Committee's Web site, www.ussnewhampshire.org, and will be sold at the Portsmouth Rotary lunch at Strawbery Banke tomorrow. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of $15 tickets to that lunch will also go toward the total cost of hosting the commissioning celebration.
