WARSAW, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Polish government will remain its troops
in Iraq until the middle of 2006, local media reported on Thursday.
According to daily Rzeczpospolita, Polish soldiers dispatched in
south-central Iraq would be declined to 900 from 1,400. The number has been
cut from 2,400 since last January.
Quoting an unnamed senior army officer, the daily said that training
exercises for new troops going to Iraq will be held in January.
On Wednesday, Polish Prime Minister Marcinkiewicz said in Iraq that his
government will make a careful decision on whether to keep troops in Iraq.
"We must make this decision carefully because it is important not only
for Poland but also in a wider sense -- in the war against terrorism and
for the stability of Iraq," said Marcinkiewicz.
The previous government, which lost power after September's
elections, once intended to pull troops out of Iraq at the beginning of next
year.Enditem
