Defense Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, who has strong ties to Washington, resigned after apparently losing a power struggle with the director of the military counterintelligence agency, Antoni Macierewicz, a close ally of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski. News reports said Mr. Sikorski confirmed that he had unsuccessfully sought to have Mr. Macierewicz dismissed. Mr. Sikorski’s departure comes as Poland is about to increase its military contingent in Afghanistan to about 1,000, from 100, and begin negotiations with the United States on a missile defense base.
