Piloting your plane

An F-111 was flying escort with a B-52 and generally making a nuisance of himself by flying rolls around the lumbering old bomber.

The message for the B-52 crew was, "Anything you can do, I can do better."

Not to be outdone, the bomber pilot announced that he would rise to the challenge.

The B-52 continued its flight, straight and level, however.

Perplexed, the fighter pilot asked, "So? What did you do?"

"We just shut down two engines."

No he wouldn't. The glide aspect ratio is for every 1 mile up you will glide 14 miles. That's a pretty common misconception like with helicopters.

But the F-111 is better at the strategic bomber role than fighter.

Must suck at both, seeing as Australia is the only country that uses them now.

most people poo-poo the performance of the ardvark (F-111). I know quite a few went into the bay off ft walton beach. But after they got the bugs worked out, it became a very fearsome machine indeed.

Im very glad the Aussies have a few still flying. Its actually a very good low level tactical bomber.

of course, with a varible geomtry wing, they might be able to stretch out that glide even more. :avi:
