WASHINGTON (AFP) -- The Pentagon warned potential adversaries against trying to take advantage of the US financial meltdown, expressing confidence Congress will fund the US military "through good times and bad."
Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell spoke as the Congress moved to approve a 612.5 billion dollar defense authorization bill even as it debates a 700 billion dollar rescue of the US banking system.
"I don't think any of our adversaries out there should be trying at all to take advantage of the fact that there is an uncertain economic climate out there," Morrell said.
He said it would be a mistake to "believe that we will not invest the funds necessary to protect our national interests."
"Through good times and bad, the Congress has been supportive of this department and what it takes to get the job done," he said.
