The Pentagon has chosen Camp Pendleton and Coronado Naval Base as the best in general excellence among installations in their respective military branches.
Leaders of the two bases will receive the 2008 Commander in Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence during a May 8 ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The award honors base commands that have made outstanding and innovative efforts to improve the quality of life for their residents.
Coronado Naval Base was cited for the Coronado Classic Speed Festival car race, the Bay Bridge Run/Walk, the construction and opening of the Admiral James B. Stockdale Gate and community support provided during the October wildfires.
The accomplishments that led to recognition for the Marine Corps' Camp Pendleton include development of a high-tech combat simulator, efforts to use alternative fuels, construction of a permanent recycling center and programs that support troops' families.
