I'm trying to find out more information about the Ist Paramarine Battalion. They made a successful amphibious landing on Gavutu Island. In particular, anything about a Robert L Manning. He was awarded the Navy Cross for gallantry in action on Gavutu. A large percentage of the paramarines ended up on Iwo Jima, and not many survived. Manning served with my dad was killed on Iwo. |

![]() I may not be the best person to ask but I will do my best. Some of the Marine and ex-Marine gentlemen on the forum would be eager to help you. You must be very proud of your Father. How old was he at Iwo Jima? I will see what I can find. I have been looking already. Thankyou again for asking. ![]() Have you tried http://www.military.com |

Nice rebuttal indeed, José.
I liked that. I'm pretty skeptical too: would FDR have jeopardized the Pacific Fleet just to find an excuse to enter the war with Japan? Because I'd rather think that the only proof that Tokyo was going to deliver an attack on P Harbor (in this case a preventive action would've been fit) would have had a major impact on the public opinion, needless of a slaughter. And thanks for the "Hell in the Pacific" 2cent, Strongbow. I found the Wispering Death irony on Spanish socialists/Al Qaeda deal quite fun, btw. |

I am not finding much on the Paramarines either. Could they also be referred to under a different name? I have started to read through the following website on Guadalcanal, particularly the Gavutu Island operation. Maybe I missed something. http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USMC...adalcanal.html I'll try and contact some of the WW2 US Veterans Associations and see what they come up with about the !st Paramarine Battalion and Robert L. Manning. |
