The 82nd Airborne Division will present one of its paratroopers with a Silver Star on Friday for his heroism during an October 2005 firefight in Afghanistan.

Maj. Gen. David Rodriguez, commander of the 82nd, will present the country’s third-highest award for valor to Staff Sgt. Patric L. Trattles on Friday morning at Fort Bragg, N.C., according to a division press release.

Trattles was serving as leader of 2nd Squad, 3rd Platoon, B Company, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment when the Oct. 29 battle occurred near Lwara, Afghanistan, the release said.

Trattles “without hesitation placed himself at every major flashpoint of the battle, each time exposing himself to heavy volumes of fire pouring down from the numerous enemy support-by-fire positions,” the release said.

According to the award narrative, Trattles moved “under enemy fire” with an M240B machine gun and opened up with “deadly accurate fire on the assaulting enemy forces. His actions successfully halted a second attempted assault.”
