An anti-terrorism court sentenced Anwar ul-Haq, a militant from the North-West Frontier Province, to death in connection with organizing a 2006 suicide attack in Karachi that killed an American diplomat, David Foy. The blast on March 2, 2006, near the gates of the United States consulate occurred just two days before President Bush’s visit to Pakistan. The police said that because of the timing there was little doubt of a link to Al Qaeda. A second defendant, Usman Ghani, was acquitted for lack of evidence. The police said the blast was intended to disrupt Mr. Bush’s visit, but he went ahead with his trip to the capital, Islamabad, as scheduled.
