German World War II Panzer Ace Otto Carius Dies at 92

BERLIN — Jan 30, 2015, 9:12 PM ET

Otto Carius, a World War II German panzer ace credited with destroying more than 150 enemy tanks, mostly on the Eastern Front, has died at 92.
Carius died at home in western Germany Jan. 24 after a short illness, according to a statement Friday on the website of the Tiger Pharmacy, which he founded in 1956.
He was drafted in 1940 as an infantryman and volunteered for a tank unit, according to his autobiography, "Tigers in the Mud."
Eventually promoted to 1st lieutenant, he was wounded multiple times and received several awards, including the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.
In the foreward to his book's 2003 edition, Carius defended his service to Nazi Germany, saying combat troops shouldn't be painted with the broad brush of guilt.

I intended the RIP Thread to be for all military related, not just Allied.

Carius had the 2nd highest number of tank kills of any soldier in WW2. He was a member of a Wehrmacht Panzer unit (or several during the course of the war) and not an SS Panzer unit. He commanded a Tiger tank from 43 on and was a tank commander to the 2nd Company of 502nd Tank Battalion. I'm quite sure he wasn't an ardent Nazi.

Back in about 2003 I made the effort of tracking down his pharmacy just to see if he was actually there, he seemed cheerful enough but I didn't do anything more than buy some sunblock.

I figured he wasn't going to be interested in discussing the dynamics of PzKpfw VI vs the Russian infantryman with a complete stranger so I just made my purchase and buggered off.

Darn, I just finished "Tigers in the Mud" not too long ago.

Feels kinda Erie flipping through it now. Much respect for Mr. Carius and the many like him who fought in Armored Forces in the 2nd WW.
