Orientation Day '67 We had been in Bein Hoa 2 weeks when we were formed into a group a 1st Lieutenant was standing next to a full size map of South Vietnam he introduced himself then ramble on for a few minutes about the War pointed out the various corps areas on the map then he drew a very small circle on the map he said this is where we are and this is the ground we hold then he ran his pointer over the map and said the enemy controls everything else , in other words we control the ground we stand on at any given time and no more .

I always love orientation day for new recruits. Smell of new combat boots and nerves. My first tour in Iraq, captain told is that what we could poor up in an hour would destroyed in five minutes. What we had in our packs was our base camp.

I had presumed up until the orientation that the U.S. controlled the majority of the Country in Vietnam and the enemy small areas , hmmm .
