ONE WINTER, while I served as an officer in an Army artillery battalion in Germany, our unit was ordered to a remote firing range for maneuvers.
The first morning, a frigid wind howled across the hilltop. Assembling the officers, the executive officer began, "Men, with such cold conditions, troop morale is bound to be a problem. Therefore, OFFICERS WILL NOT SHIVER!"
