BAGHDAD, Dec 15 (AFP) - An Iraqi civil guard was killed and four people
wounded in sporadic outbreaks of violence Thursday as the country went to
the polls to choose a new permanent government, security sources said.

The guard was killed near the northern mixed Sunni Arab and Kurdish city of
Mosul as he investigated a grenade thrown by a cyclist at people outside a
voting centre, police said.

Two police officers were also wounded in the blast.

Strict security measures have been imposed nationwide, including a ban on
vehicle traffic to safeguard against attacks such as car bombings.

In Baghdad, another two civilians were injured when three mortar rounds
struck Sadr City and the central neighborhood of Bab al-Muadahm, an interior
ministry source said.

A huge blast rocked the heart of Baghdad just minutes after polling stations
opened at 7 am (0400 GMT), near the near the highly-fortified Green Zone
where Iraqi government offices and the US embassy are located.

No casualties were immediately reported.

In the center of Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikit, another mortar round
targeted a polling station located in a school, but no-one was hurt.
