If you look at the ranking of Olympic medal list, can you draw a similar line of the military power of the countries? I see almost all big powers are on the top 20 list. Well Russia will climb much higher at the end of the Games.

Medal Ranking:

Its because sports cost money. only one missing is Israel, cause we spend all our money on the military... :?

Yeah, I've noticed that. Israel is also under-represented because the have a pretty tiny population overall, but like Sherman says, its also not a major priority for the Israelis.

You see the two most powerful economies showing. Japan and the USA. You also have three most powerful militaries sitting 1, 2, 3. Australia sets higher in the list than their military power would seem to rate, but nobody said the parallel is perfect, just somewhat close.

I dont mean to sound jingoistic or unintellegent, but frankly I just think the culture of sports In the USA is greater then In many places In the world...

Thats a shame, sports can go along way In breaking down borders.

Or creating them (just go to Italy and root for the wrong soccer club  ).

On topic, bigger nations generally have bigger militaries, and also have larger resources (personnel and other) to draw on for athletes, so I doubt the militarism and the athleticism of any of these states are actually directly linked.

Ocaisionally :D You think about European soccer teams and are reminded of the British and German "hooligans" who riot every time there team plays. Now, a bit :eek:fftopic: America is starting to look like this, too(the 2003 Browns game with all the bottles flying around :stupid: )

But friendly competition, like the US and Australia in swimming, or the US and Canada at EVERYTHING, is what brings countries closer together :D

australia don't have that good of an army so why are they up there

The question was answered already by myself.

Hey, anyone else hate how the Official Site lists? Puts it in order of Gold Medals without giving you the option to resort by overall medals. Its irritating.

How about using the Winter Olympics in 2002 medal list?? ;)

Gold - Silver - Bronze

1. Norway NOR 13 5 7
2. Germany GER 12 16 8
3. United States of America USA 10 13 11
4. Canada CAN 7 3 7
5. Russian Federation RUS 5 4 4
6. France FRA 4 5 2
7. Italy ITA 4 4 5
8. Finland FIN 4 2 1
9. Netherlands NED 3 5 0
10. Austria AUT 3 4 10
11. Switzerland SUI 3 2 6
12. Croatia CRO 3 1 0
13. People's Republic of China CHN 2 2 4

Who's the Superpower now... :rambo:

Winter Olympics? HaHa, many countries never have snow, let alone a winter sport

Hell, CHINA is only getting stronger every year :D

1 USA United States 34 38 28 100 1
2 CHN China 31 17 14 62 3
3 RUS Russia 23 26 35 84 2

See, that's what's irritating. The official site lists based on the number of gold medals. They should be in this order:

1.) United States 34 38 28 100
2.) Russia 23 26 35 84
3.) China 31 17 14 62
4.) Australia 17 16 16 49
5.) Germany 14 15 18 47
6.) Japan 15 10 11 36
7.) France 11 8 12 31
8.) Italy 9 10 11 30
9.) Britain 9 8 12 29
10.) South Korea 8 11 9 28
11.) Ukraine 9 5 8 22
12.) Netherlands 4 9 9 22
13.) Cuba 5 6 10 21
14.) Romania 8 5 6 19
15.) Spain 3 11 5 19
16.) Hungary 8 6 3 17
17.) Greece 6 5 4 15
18.) Belarus 2 4 8 14
19.) Canada 3 6 3 12
20.) Bulgaria 2 1 9 12

K yeah that explains it and that the fact that i think we spend more money on sports than military in aus

The average Aussie seems to be better than average as a physical specimen compared to the average of the rest of the human race.
i guess that would make us better soldiers to, to bad we dont have the quantity we only have the quality

Admin edit: Removed you comment. watch it with the flaming!!

And yes, if this did perfectly parralel military power we would not need wars anymore, think about it, instead of fighting wars we could just wait for the next olympics, well actually we would have to let both Olympics go, since if it were Winter Olympics Germany and especially Canada would have an inflated rank, and in the summer olympics Japan and China have inflated ranks.
