when in doubt go army!
this link is to the FAQ for the official army historical group http://www.army.mil/cmh/lineage/OrgHist.htm#AppE this is what they say: The oldest unit in the active Army is the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery, which perpetuates the Alexander Hamilton Battery of the Revolutionary War. The oldest regiment in the active Army is the 3d Infantry (The Old Guard), which was originally organized in 1784 as the First American Regiment. However, the oldest units in the entire Army, dating back to 1636, belong to the Massachusetts Army National Guard. ![]() |

I'm going to have to find out from my Father what units my ancestors served in. He's been working on filling out our family Bibles lately, and found one of our ancestors had served in the military during the French and Indian War in 1756. It would be interesting to see if his unit is still around in any way.
