Officer Combatant Question

I'm writing a WWII story and my question is:

How high a rank can a US Army Officer hold and still be in combat on a regular basis? By combat I mean a US Infantry Officer fighting wehrmacht infantry and armor.

I apologize if this is in the wrong spot. :hide:

Doesn't a Battalion Commander lead his men into battle or be right up there with them and in the UK he would be a Lt Colonel at least

In WWII, I would have to say since combat was moving as it was, even General Officers would be classified in that manner.

Forget his name, but a 2 star and driver crashed into aGerman tanl in the Ardennes.

As they surrendered the TC put two bullets through the General's head.
It was dark and he thought th guy was going for his pistol.
His helmet is on display at Ft Knox.

Unusual circumstance,for sure.

Normally even a captain would be runnibg a CP, with LTs beating the bush.
My dad was with the 506th.
I've read a lot about it. It was a huge mess.
