The commanding officer of the 2 Btn The Parachute Regiment narrowly avoided being killed when he was hit by two rocket propelled grenades, it was disclosed last night.
Lt Col Andy Harrison was said to be extremely lucky to avoid fatal injuries after RPG missile, designed to penetrate armoured vehicles, failed to detonate when it hit his body armour, and the second one exploded at his feet.

The Para became the most senior officer to be wounded in action after a second RPG landed at his feet during a Taliban attack in Helmand.

Lt Col Harrison was returning from Camp Bastion in an armoured vehicle when his soldiers spotted a number of Afghans digging an IED (improvised explosive device) into the road.

They stopped and immediately came under fire from the Taliban. It is understood that Lt Col Harrison became engaged in the fire fight before he was hit in the chest.

He was evacuated back to the Camp Bastion hospital for treatment. However the CO was soon back in command after being treated for his injuries.
